Digital Technologies Resource background information
Summary:
This resource can support the Design and Technologies resource as the data collected can flow on or this can be a stand-alone resource.
Primarily, the resource is ways to collect, record and analyse data, specifically focusing on using data from test flights of paper planes.

Students prior knowledge is they are familiar with ways to collect information using tally marks and organising the recorded data into bar graphs and analysing the data to compare, question and draw conclusions.
They can:
- Pose questions
- Identify and clarify information and ideas
- Organise and process information
These resources and ideas support digital technologies for the Years 3 & 4 Band Descriptors.
Focus is on Content Descriptors ACTDIK008_ (Knowledge and Understanding) with ACTDIP009 (Processes and Production Skills) acting as a complementary descriptor.
Digital Technologies
ACTDIK008 ~ Recognise different types of data and explore how the same data can be represented in different ways
ACTDIP009 ~ Collect, record and analyse different types of data using simple software to create information and solve problems
This resource also fits in with these learning areas:
Mathematics
ACMSP095 - Data representation and interpretation. Select and trial methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording sheets
ACMSP096 - Construct suitable data displays, with and without the use of digital technologies, from given or collected data. Include tables, column graphs and picture graphs where one picture can represent many data values
Humanities and Social Sciences
ACHASSI075 - Record, sort and represent data and the location of places and their characteristics in different formats, including simple graphs, tables and maps, using discipline-appropriate conventions
ACHASSI077 - Examine information to identify different points of view and distinguish facts from opinions
Media Arts
(ACAMAM060)- Plan, create and present media artworks for specific purposes with awareness of responsible media practice
(ACAMAR061)Identify intended purposes and meanings of media artworks, using media arts key concepts, starting with media artworks in Australia including media artworks of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Students have been invited to the annual 'paper plane flying and advertising' championships.
Students will survey other students in the school asking what advertisement or how they should promote the school into their paper plane design (Visual Arts feature) Students introduced to Indigenous ways of life - hunting tools and techniques (throwing styles) - compare throwing technique and accuracy. Students collect and record data of throwing objects Prior to the championship event students will create and test their paper planes. Test flight predictions will be made prior to testing. All test flight data will be collected and include a list of materials used and flights measuring distance in air, height and time length of flight. Flight test data will be stored in a variety of graphs and provided to the event organisers to analyse. This will place them in flying categories throughout the championships. |
Data collection recall - tally marks / column graph Make predictions of paper plane flight pattern Flight testing and measuring Record flight test information Test throwing objects of different shapes/weight and collect data. Compare/analyse data statistics Make predictions Championship flyoffs Click on the drop down tab to access the 'Resource' for Digital Technologies |
